New Watergrasshill Plaza

Watergrasshill’s new plaza nearing completion.

Anyone in Watergrasshill over the last month will have seen the construction work in the centre of the village. One of the public consultation findings in December 2019 concluded that Watergrasshill no longer had a focal point due to new estates, built mainly at the southern end of the village. We needed a “town square”, somewhere for people to gather after sporting wins, markets, or sit and have a coffee. The empty grassy area outside the new apartment block seemed the ideal location.

We put our requirements out to tender, and Landscape Architect Cathal O’ Meara was selected to design the plaza. Cathal met us on-site, and we were able to go back and forth with him to get the design that we wanted and fit in with our budget limitations.

We built our new plaza with two Cork County Council grants from the Village Enhancement and Recreational Grant schemes. Huge thanks are due to the council as the project couldn’t have gone ahead without their generosity.

A lot of work went into this, and we want to thank members of the Planning & Development Action Group for their time and expertise. We plan to officially open and name the new plaza later in the new year.
